26 YEARS OF ROYAL EFFORTS CULMINATE IN A UN DECISION STRENGTHENING MOROCCO’S SOVEREIGNTY OVER THE SAHARA

The decisive word in UN Resolution No. 2797 concerning the Moroccan Sahara belongs to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God protect and support him. Indeed, a dossier of such importance and magnitude could not have advanced or been definitively resolved in the Security Council without the King’s constant efforts over the years and his personal involvement in this strategic matter for the Kingdom of Morocco.

His Majesty’s insightful leadership and effective, peaceful diplomacy on this extremely complex issue have once again borne fruit, as in previous stages, resulting in broad support from the international community and a historic decision against which no state voted. This decision reflects the future orientations of this issue and establishes the foundation for its resolution: any debate after October 31 will take place solely within the framework of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.

In an interview on Saturday, November 1, with Morocco’s Second Channel, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Mr. Nasser Bourita, made statements that cannot be overlooked and confirm the assertions of this article. He stated verbatim: “His Majesty the King followed the matter daily, and during the negotiations, the decision was finalized through His Majesty’s direct intervention and direct interaction with the leaders of certain countries,” adding also, “Russia did not use its veto for His Majesty the King and Morocco.”

Mr. Bourita explained that “His Majesty the King adopted the autonomy initiative in 2004 as a strategic alternative after the referendum process stalled,” noting that U.S. recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in 2020 was the result of direct and strong diplomatic interaction by His Majesty with the U.S. administration, and that the U.S. position remained consistent despite the change of administrations between Trump and Biden.

The Minister also highlighted that “the royal leadership brought about a change in the positions of several European capitals, where the Spanish and German stances changed in 2021, followed by France in 2024, and then the United Kingdom in 2025,” emphasizing that Moroccans are now reaping the fruits of 26 years of relentless royal work.

For 26 years, His Majesty King Mohammed VI has been laying the groundwork for the future regarding the Moroccan Sahara. Thanks to his supreme royal vision, the autonomy initiative evolved from a negotiation document into an international diplomatic reference, enjoying broad support from the world’s strongest countries. It has thus transformed from a political option into a tangible reality that shapes the present and future of the Moroccan Sahara within a renewed and prosperous national project under the banner of the Kingdom of Morocco.

It is impossible to discuss all these elements without noting the references in the royal speech, in which His Majesty thanked all friendly states that extended a hand to Morocco in this matter and outlined the future vision for implementing the autonomy plan on Moroccan soil. It was truly a royal speech worthy of a king, written with elegance and grandeur, and full of powerful messages. Among the most eloquent, His Majesty declared: “And despite the positive developments in the issue of our territorial unity, Morocco remains committed to finding a solution with no winners or losers, preserving the dignity of all parties. Morocco does not consider these developments a victory, nor does it use them to inflame conflict and disputes.”

In conclusion, after this historic victory, the fruit of fifty years of the Kingdom’s struggle on all fronts, we can recall the saying of Swami Sivananda: “The harder the conflict, the more glorious the victory. Self-realization requires a struggle of the highest magnitude.”
