Communication lost with boat carrying Syrian migrants near Algerian coast

The Violations Documentation Center in NE Syria reported that “contact was lost with a fishing boat carrying 16 Syrian immigrants, which set off from the coast of the Algerian city of Oran in the Mediterranean Sea, according to what the migrants’ relatives said, amid diminishing hope of finding them alive.”

According to the Center, the boat set off last Wednesday, April 26, 2023 from the coast of the Algerian city of Oran towards the Spanish shores, where their relatives said that they had lost contact with their children. The Center stated that most of the people on board the boat are from Kobani canton.

On October 3 of last year, a boat carrying migrants sank off the Algerian coast near the city of Oran, killing 18 people on board, most of them Syrians, including 9 citizens from Kobani canton.
